What Is Unity?
Unity is a worldwide Christian organization with a positive and practical approach to life, seeking to accept the good in people and in all life. God is seen as being all that is good … love, wisdom, prosperity, wholeness, strength, etc. Unity stresses that God is not a human-like being, living in some place, for that limits God and our own understanding. God is Spirit, everywhere present, the one and only Spirit behind, in, and through all things visible and invisible.
Unity emphasizes the inherent divinity within every child of God and teaches that through a practical understanding and application of that which Jesus taught every person can realize and express his/her divinity for a happier, fuller, more abundant and successful life.
Unity rejects the belief that there is any power or presence opposed to God. It sees that there are evil appearances and suffering in the world, but attributes these to humankind’s ignorance, self-will, and erroneous use of God’s laws of life.
Unity proclaims the divinity of Jesus, but goes further and assures that all people are children of God and therefore divine in nature. Jesus fully expressed His inherent divinity and taught us how to express ours, as well. Salvation then, is the expansion of one’s spiritual understanding of one’s own divinity and wholeness. We integrate this understanding by doing our best to live life according to the principles demonstrated by our brother and master teacher Jesus.
Unity teaches that our human mind is the connecting link with God, Divine Mind, and shows how the action of our mind affects our body and circumstances. Emphasis is placed on understanding the power that thoughts, feelings, decisions, and actions have upon our lives. As we develop our ability to align our thoughts, feelings, words and actions with Divine Mind, we create lives ever more abundant in faith, love, joy and peace.
Prayer is not seen as a technique for changing God or changing outer conditions, but for expanding and transforming our minds and hearts, thus changing us. Daily prayer and meditation are encouraged to increase our conscious awareness of the Spirit of God already within us.
Unity seeks to relate spirituality to daily needs, affirming that for every need there is God’s whole and complete answer. It sees the Bible as the unfolding story of humankind’s spiritual evolution toward greater understanding of and relationship with God.
Unity understands that there are many paths to God. Different religions are like spokes on a wheel, with the hub being God. They may be set apart by variances of beliefs or approaches, but they are all seeking the one God as the hub of all life. Consequently, Unity does not deny anyone the right to have his/her own beliefs.
Unity seeks to uplift and glorify God’s Spirit in all people. It counsels us not to place emphasis on our past sins, but rather develop the good within us so that we can create greater good in our lives and in the world.
Unity’s focus is not so much on what happens after death as on how to live fully in the present moment. Unity believes in the continuum of life and views the present moment, both before and after death, as part of eternal life.
Unity communities are entirely supported by their congregations; however, no specific financial obligation is imposed on anyone. Unity believes that the desire to give must be initiated from within the giver if he or she is to reap the joy of sharing and activate the law of circulation. As we give, so we receive. All support is by free will offerings.
Unity is inclusive, open and affirming. We welcome in dignity and love people of every race, color, religion, sexual orientation, social background, and economic level.
Millions of people have been introduced to Unity through the periodical called Daily Word, published at Unity World Headquarters in Lee’s Summit, MO. Millions of others are familiar with Unity through its prayer ministry known as Silent Unity. Silent Unity has maintained a round-the-clock prayer vigil for more than 100 years. Anyone may call via a toll-free number (1-800-669-2000) and receive prayer help.
Because of similarity in names, Unity has, on occasion, been confused with other organizations. However, there is no connection between Unity and Unitarianism or the Unification Church.
What is Metaphysics? In Unity we use the term metaphysics to refer to the fact that there is an underlying Truth or reality above and beyond what we perceive with our senses. This reality is the foundation upon which the world we see is based.
Metaphysics is used to help us see beyond appearances and outer-oriented ways of living to an underlying reality. Locating and activating this inner awareness of the Truth enables us to align with God and transform our outer world for the better. We see from a spiritual perspective.
